a quiet friday

i awoke to snow...

silent, unexpected.

a small tangent along the sure march to spring.

rising early,

before my love had opened his eyes

(even before the sand-colored kitten

had begun his morning calls to come make him breakfast)

i pondered how to fill my day.

i decided on

a walk through the freshly fallen powder

and

an end to my (unintentional) break from baking.

now it is evening

and as the darkness begins to blanket the world

i smell the honey whole wheat bread

baking in the oven

and the mixed bean stew

simmering on the stove

and i am happy.

tonight there will be

a few glasses of red wine

a cold-weather feast

a warm blanket on the couch

a new canadian novel

a candle-lit living room

a steaming cup of tea

a farewell to characters we have grown fond of.

a perfect quiet friday.
